Cerner, the Kansas City-based electronic health record (EHR) developer, is offering free CommonWell Health services to its clients for three years, CEO Neal Patterson announced in a blog post.

CommonWell Health Alliance is a nonprofit trade group, made up of some of the largest revenue-driving EHR vendors in the country, that is aiming to drive interoperability in healthcare. Having launched in 2013, its services include patient identification and linking, record location and retrieval, certification and authentication, and consent management. The alliance launched pilot programs in various cities across the U.S. in 2013 that have ended. Patterson said in his blog that they proved Cerner can exchange patient data with other CommonWell members.

Cerner, one of the founding members, is allowing its clients to receive CommonWell services for free until 2018. The only charge is a nominal set up fee, said Patterson. "We believe that by providing the service free for three years, it will give your organization the chance to evaluate the service," he wrote in the blog.
