Epic and InterSystems earned highest performance scores among healthcare providers for health information exchange (HIE) and interoperability in a report from research firm KLAS.

Health information exchange was one of the first answers to the challenge of interoperability and The KLAS report, “HIE 2016: Shifts in Vendor Performance and Provider Outlook,” reflects feedback from providers from 332 healthcare organizations who were asked whether their vendor will be able to meet their interoperability needs in the next few years. The research aimed to understand vendors’ past performance and providers’ outlook for the future, KLAS stated.

Epic and InterSystems currently have the highest performance scores for EMR-dependent and EMR-independent HIEs, respectively.

And, according to the report, Epic and Medicity have the most customers who predict their vendor will meet interoperability needs over the next three years and KLAS cites technology prowess and reliable partnering for this provider confidence.

“EMR-dependent Epic simplifies user access to data from both Epic and non-Epic EMRs. EMR-independent Medicity backs up a persuasive road map with follow-through,” the report authors wrote.

KLAS researchers also asked providers about vendors’ interface delivery and 40 percent of respondents said vendors take more than three months to complete a typical interface. Among EMR-independent vendors, Informatics Corporation of America and InterSystems rated high for interface quality and Epic rated high for interface quality among EMR-independent vendors, with providers specifically noting that Epic speeds delivery.

The KLAS report also ranks vendors by their ability to support higher complexity and InterSystems and Medicity ranked highest, indicating these vendors support the most diverse environments and see the highest use of rated functionality.
