PeraHealth, a provider of predictive, real-time clinical surveillance solutions, has joined Epic’s “App Orchard,” a site where third-party developers can learn about Epic's application programming interfaces (APIs) and list their apps for Epic customers to explore and access.

Charlotte, N.C.-based PeraHealth was featured as one of Healthcare Informatics’ “Up and Comer” companies for 2017. Its Rothman Index (RI) invented by founders Michael and Steven Rothman is a composite measurement of a patient's condition using 26 clinical variables taken from the EHR and sensitive to signs of patient clinical decline. More than 80 hospitals and care providers use the Rothman Index, including Yale New Haven Health System, Houston Methodist, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Mission Health.

Many hospitals use the Rothman Index in their efforts to battle sepsis. “That is a key example of how it is used,” said PeraHealth CEO Stephanie Alexander. “Sepsis is one of those conditions that can sneak up on you in the hospital. All hospitals are working on ways to get early information to determine if a patient is at high risk of sepsis.”

In a prepared statement about the App Orchard, Alexander said, “With the compatibility available through the App Orchard, we can smoothly integrate with Epic platforms to improve workflow for care teams, as well as standardize deployment methodology across all Epic platforms – expanding the potential to further integrate this functionality to additional PeraHealth solutions.”

Yale New Haven Hospital, a nonprofit, 1,541-bed tertiary medical center in Connecticut, leverages PeraHealth’s technology, which uses APIs from the App Orchard, across its sites to help improve patient outcomes. Yale New Haven clinicians are able to leverage key features from the EHR platform within PeraTrend, including a customized patient list called My List – meaning a clinician can extend the functionality of My List in the PeraTrend dashboard to view the condition of patients only on their list.

Epic is hosting an App Orchard conference at its Verona, Wisc., campus on Nov. 9-10.
