Emily Lovallo, MD, Medical Director for the UPMC Health Plan’s Freedom House 2.0 ambulatory training program, is a compassionate leader who should be recognized for her tireless efforts to train and transform those participants enrolled in the program. A remarkable leader well beyond her years of thirty-eight, Dr. Lovallo maintains a demanding schedule as an emergency room physician at UPMC Mercy Hospital, where she is also assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, Director of Ultrasound Services, Director of Ultrasound Education, and Medical Director of Freedom House 2.0. The Freedom House 2.0 program is a six-week long course that introduces a variety of healthcare careers to students; and it is intentionally targeted to Medicare enrollees between the ages of 18 and 24. The curriculum includes basic anatomy and physiology, assessment and treatment of basic medical emergencies, CPR, First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, and a variety of public health topics. Along with class lectures, participants are able to shadow various jobs including RN’s, EMT’s, Medical Assistances or Patient Care Technicians. The program, named after the Freedom House Ambulance Service, formed in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in the 1960’s, a program that paved the way for the development of our modern-day EMS system. As the Medical Director for Freedom House 2.0, Dr. Lovallo is responsible for oversight of the training curriculum, recruitment, maintaining funding for the program, and sustaining community partnerships. She never hesitates to involve herself and be available for the students, many of whom she maintains a relationship even after they graduate from the program. Her selfless and generous character have endeared Dr. Lovallo to her many students, colleagues, and friends, and it is for this reason, she is an excellent fit for Healthcare Innovation’s 40 Under 40 program.

Emily Lovallo, MD, specializes in emergency medicine and is certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She is affiliated with UPMC Horizon, UPMC Somerset, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and UPMC Presbyterian. She completed her residency and fellowship at Alameda County Medical Center and medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
