Due to its use of RFID technology to improve patient care and outcomes, New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (NYPBMH) has received acute care Stage 7 revalidation on the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM).
NYPBMH incorporated RFID technology into their medication tray assembly process, in order to save time and improve accuracy and ultimately improve distribution of medications.
HIMSS Analytics, the presenter of the Stage 7 recognition, introduced the revalidation process in 2015 to ensure that its EMR Adoption Model “continues to reflect industry best practices so that Stage 7 organizations reflect the optimal use and sharing of patient data toward improved healthcare quality, safety, and operational efficiencies.”
“NYPBMH has been using technology to improve patient safety and quality, reduce waste and save lives,” Parag Mehta, M.D., senior vice chairman of the Department of Medicine and chief medical information officer at NYPBMH, said in a statement.
According to Mehta, the hospital has reduced mortality due to sepsis by 6 percent, and following implementation the hospital also has reduced infections and medication errors. “We have improved vaccination administration and many other processes. Because we have been able to integrate all patient information into one unified system, the hospital can run more efficiently, and improve the speed and quality of care it provides,”
“NYPBMH has several initiatives targeted at improving operational efficiency and patient safety. Most notable is the innovative RFID solution used for code trays. They have been able to significantly reduce the cost of managing trays while improving accuracy and thus patient safety,” Philip Bradley, regional director North America, healthcare advisory services, operations, HIMSS Analytics, said in a statement.
NYPBMH will be recognized at the 2017 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on Feb. 19-23, 2017, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
