The Cleveland Clinic has hired Edward Marx, a notable experienced health IT leader, to be its chief information officer (CIO), effective Sept. 1.
According to a press release from Cleveland Clinic, Marx brings with him more than 25 years of experience as a healthcare IT leader. He most recently held the position of executive vice president at the Advisory Board Company, providing IT leadership and strategy for NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest public healthcare system in the nation. Previously, he spent eight years as CIO at Texas Health Resources, following five years in that role at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
What’s more, Marx is active with professional organizations, advisory boards and higher education throughout the health IT industry. He is a Fellow of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). He has won numerous awards, including HIMSS/CHIME 2013 CIO of the Year.
“Ed has spent his career fostering a culture of innovation and leading teams at the forefront of healthcare information technology,” Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Toby Cosgrove, M.D., said in a statement. “As CIO he will advance the Cleveland Clinic’s ‘patients first’ culture by providing information-enabled, data-driven technology focused on facilitating world-class patient care.”
Said Marx, “Successful healthcare IT has to ask, ‘How do we innovate to save lives?’ Technology has such potential to save many, many more lives, if we can innovate and impact patient safety and the quality of care we deliver.”

At Cleveland Clinic, Marx takes over for C. Martin Harris, M.D., who held the CIO position there for 20 years. Dr. Harris is now the chief business officer and associate vice president of the health enterprise at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
