The Advisory Board Company, a global consulting firm partnered with thousands of healthcare organizations, is awarding two hospitals and one health system for their work in delivering improved clinical outcomes at lower cost. The organizations did so through a focus on accountable care, which Advisory Board says promotes hospital-physician collaboration and leverages physician-level cost and quality performance data.
The three organizations according to The Advisory Board Company were Virginia Hospital Center (Arlington, Va.), Alegent Health (Omaha, Neb.), and Monmouth Medical Center (Long Branch, N.J.). Combined the three organizations collected more than $13.2 million in aggregate savings.
Virginia Hospital Center, a 342-bed facility, utilized quality and cost performance data to engage its physicians on improving documentation and clinical performance. This led to 38 percent decrease in its mortality observed/expected ratio, a 14 percent decrease in average length of stay, and a 26 percent reduction in cost per case.
"We have been preparing Virginia Hospital Center and our physicians for a new era of public accountability when consumers will have unprecedented access to a wide range of data such as readmissions and patient surveys," Jeffrey DiLisi, M.D., vice president and chief medical officer at Virginia Hospital Center, said in a statement
Alegent Health, a 10-hospital health system, had its physicians and nurses aligned to collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams at each of its facilities to reduce unnecessary utilization of medical resources. The Monmouth Medical Center, a 527-bed teaching hospital, developed care efficiency initiatives across clinical areas such as joint replacements, vaginal deliveries, and heart failure.
The Advisory Board Company will award these institutions with the 2012 Crimson Physician Partnership Award this week at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes in Orlando.
