Aledade, Aetna Partner to Expand Value-Based Care in Three States

April 24, 2019

A new partnership between Aledade and Aetna will aim to expand value-based care in Delaware, West Virginia and Utah.

In Delaware and West Virginia, the agreement will cover Aetna’s commercially insured patient-centered medical home and Medicare Advantage (MA) members who see Aledade accountable care organization (ACO) physicians, and in Utah it will include just the MA members, officials said in an announcement.

Aledade, a Bethesda, Md.-based company started by Farzad Mostashari, M.D., and focused on physician-led ACOs, recently raised $10 million more in funding, according to a January report. The company has now received $136 million in total funding.

For physicians participating in Aledade ACOs, this new agreement presents the opportunity to share in a portion of healthcare cost savings generated from improved quality of care and health outcomes. And for Aetna members, this means benefiting from Aledade's focus on access to primary care, preventive services, care coordination, and population health management, officials said.

“Our partner physicians in Delaware and West Virginia have reduced healthcare costs by providing better care to thousands of patients in each state. That’s the power of combining primary care physicians with value-based arrangements to keep people healthy,” Mostashari said in a statement this week. “We are excited to partner with Aetna to bring this model of care to more patients, and we look forward to growing this multi-state partnership.”

Aledade’s officials attest that the company’s ACOs have reduced preventable hospital stays, emergency room visits, and unnecessary medical services, driving more than $55 million in healthcare cost reductions.

Recently, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) announced a partnership with Aledade to launch a value-based care initiative to support primary care physicians across the state. Through the initiative, the two companies will support physician-led ACOs tailored specifically for primary care physicians and the communities they serve.

Aledade also has recently partnered with Humana that will enable physicians in Aledade’s ACOs in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia who currently participate in Humana’s Medicare Advantage network to utilize tools and resources from both organizations to help deliver value-based care to Humana Medicare Advantage members.
