In this Healthcare Informatics podcast, Senior Editor, Gabriel Perna and Editor in Chief, Mark Hagland discuss this year’s Healthcare Informatics 100, the annual ranking of the top vendors in healthcare IT. In particular, Perna and Hagland discuss how this seems to be a golden period for healthcare IT vendors and this is the case. As Hagland wrote on his recent blog:

This year, the top company reported $3.4 billion in revenues, while the 100th largest company reported $35 million in revenues. In 2009, reporting $35 million in revenues would have put a vendor company up at number 65th on the list.

In particular, Hagland talks about how policy is driving the upward trajectory of this industry and the HCI 100 list. “One of the core things we’re seeing—if you look at hospitals—10 years ago only 25 percent of them were on EHR. Now, 95 percent of them are. I think that’s reflective in the revenues,” he said in the podcast.

The two also discuss how Cerner seems to be benefiting from the growth of this industry, having jumped from fifth to second in two years. “I think that… since they’re moving toward a broader population health strategy that the next few years may be strong for Cerner,” Hagland said on the podcast.

Those concepts of population health seem to be a part of the go-forward strategy for many of the companies in the HCI 100, not just Cerner. Whether it’s care management, patient registry and identification, or data analytics, “everyone is getting into the act,” Hagland said on the podcast, calling it an area of opportunity for many companies.
