Former administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Marilyn Tavenner, R.N., will become president and chief executive of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), according to various news reports.

AHIP is a national political advocacy and trade association with about 1,300 member companies that sell health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans. The board of America’s Health Insurance Plans elected Tavenner at a meeting on July 15, according to a New York Times report. Tavenner will take over the position on August 24.

In January, CMS confirmed that Tavenner will be leaving her post, to be replaced by Andrew Slavitt, then-principal deputy administrator for CMS. Late last week, President Barack Obama asked the U.S. Senate to confirm Slavitt, who was serving as CMS Acting Administrator, to the permanent position.

In health IT, Tavenner was champion of regulatory measures like meaningful use and ICD-10, often fighting to keep those regulatory programs pushing forward.
