HIMSS Survey: Average Health IT Worker Makes $111K, but Men Earn More than Women
Health information technology (IT) professionals made an average salary of approximately $111,000 in 2015, according to a HIMSS Compensation Survey from the Chicago-based 2015 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
The average salary in this sample of 1,900 respondents is exactly $111,387.52; the median salary is $90,000.00. The survey respondents are made up of CEOs, CIOs, chief medical officers (CMOs), IT project managers, and others. This survey looked at salaries that IT professionals earn, and whether or not they have received a raise or bonus in the past year. This survey also analyzed key demographic categories, including organizational net revenue, facility type, geographic region, gender, professional level and length of service.
Looking at gender, for instance, the men in the health IT sector earn $126,262, compared to $100,762 for women. Individuals at companies with revenues of at least $1 billion earned average salaries of $134,200, compared with $114,168 among employees at companies with revenue under $5 million; the $500 million-$999 million company revenue range had the highest paid employees on average, with a salary of $142, 950.
What’s more, employees with more than 20 years of experience on the job earned an average of $115,864. Individuals with 15 to 19 years experience earned an average of $117,157, and those with less than a single year of experience averaged $107, 517. Additionally, consulting firms ranked as the organization with the highest paid employees, with the average respondent reporting a salary of nearly $141,000. Healthcare system corporate came in second with a salary of about $119,000, while those working in multi-hospital systems earned an average salary of $99,000, ranking at the bottom.
Finally, those in executive management earned an average of $196, 472, leading the way of all positions. Senior management positions came in second with a salary of $163, 217, while associate staff positions predictably ranked at the bottom with a salary of $69,104. Slightly less than half of respondents, or 47 percent, received a bonus in the past year. Nearly eight in 10 (77.4 percent) said they received a salary increase in 2015.
Interestingly, a recent 2015 HealthITJobs.com Healthcare IT Salary Survey that included more than 700 health IT workers found that many health IT professionals still don't think they are getting paid what they deserve and plan to change jobs soon. According to those results, the average health IT salary is $87,443 (median $80,000) and the average bonus is $7,990 (median $5,000). These numbers can swing significantly in either direction, depending on the specifics of the job in question, that report found.
