Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare has appointed A. Marc Harrison, M.D., as its new president and CEO to take the helm when current CEO Charles Sorenson, M.D., retires in October.
After his retirement as president and CEO October 15, 2016, Sorenson will continue with Intermountain as founding director of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, which is expected to open in 2018. Intermountain is a 22-hospital health system with 185 clinics, a medical group with about 1,300 employed physicians, a health plans division called SelectHealth and other health services.
Harrison recently held positions as chief of International Business Development for Cleveland Clinic, headquartered in Ohio, and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which is a multi-specialty hospital and part of Mubadala Healthcare’s network of healthcare facilities. At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Harrison assembled a 3,500 member multi-national workforce and oversaw all aspects of clinical and business operations for the new medical campus, which cared for patients from 31 countries in its first 10 months of operations.
Earlier roles included serving as chief medical operations officer for Cleveland Clinic where he was responsible for a broad range of clinical operations worldwide, and as chairman of Pediatric Critical Care.
Harrison earned an undergraduate degree at Haverford College and a medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency and an internship in pediatric critical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, working primarily in the critical care units of Intermountain’s Primary Children’s Hospital. He later received a masters of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University and completed additional study in management at Harvard Business School.
