Humana to open digital health center in Boston’s Seaport

Aug. 28, 2018

Humana plans to open a digital health and analytics center in the Seaport District next summer that will employ up to 250 people, marking the first major foray into Boston for one of the country’s largest insurers.

Louisville, Kentucky-based Humana announced Aug. 27 that it has signed a lease for 40,000 square feet of office space at 281 Summer St. The office, to be known as Humana Studio H, “will focus on pioneering new products and services that will then be developed for use across the organization,” the company said in a statement. It will also house a team “focused on creating a new health experience for seniors,” Humana said.

The for-profit insurer said it plans to employ up to 250 people there within the next five years. The company already has a small presence in the Boston area with fewer than 40 employees, and those employees will move into the new space, a spokesman said.

The office at 281 Summer St. is located near the future headquarters campus of General Electric, as well as the Seaport District site where Amazon plans to build a large new office tower.

The digital health operation will led by Heather Cox in the newly created position of chief digital health and analytics officer. Cox most recently served as chief technology and digital officer for USAA. Prior to that, she led Citigroup’s unit focused on fintech, and served as head of card operations at Capital One.

Beth Bierbower, who has worked for Humana in a number of senior roles, will oversee the senior experience business.
