In part two of a two-part podcast, Senior Editor, Gabriel Perna and Editor in Chief, Mark Hagland are back, this time to discuss the maturing of the mobile EHR market. In Perna’s feature story for the July/August issue, he noted that while personal health mobile applications and software is at a fever pitch, clinical data applications are not yet at that level. In the podcast, the two try to determine why that is.

Part one of the podcast on ACOs

Mobile devices will work best as a way to consolidate multiple environments and multiple clinical data applications. Hagland notes that creating these kinds of solutions has been a case of “easier said than done.” Furthermore, Perna adds, meaningful use and other regulatory mandates are playing a part in the slowed adoption and development of mobile EHR applications. Even those on the forefront of mobile EHR adoptions are using applications to compliment the desktop application because of limitations within mobility.

What will drive adoption of mobile EHR applications? “The use case needs,” says Hagland. “As organizations participate in accountable care organizations (ACOs), patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), and transitions-of-care reduction programs, they will need to move seamlessly from one environment to the other. That will make the difference here.”

Both Perna and Hagland also say better form factor—specifically in regards to documentation—will help mobile along. Wrapping it up, Perna predicts that like ACOs, the best is yet to come with mobile EHR applications. He says providers will put their efforts into this and once those regulatory mandates are finished, there will be a surge of innovative apps.
