NewYork-Presbyterian, which launched the first hospital hackathon two years ago, is again engaging the tech community with its InnovateNYP: Pediatric App Challenge to develop apps and tools to advance pediatric healthcare.

The 10-week long InnovateNYP: Pediatric App Challenge will kick off on the weekend of March 12 with the InnovateNYP: Pediatric Appathon, according to a NewYork-Presbyterian press release, and designers, developers, clinicians and startups will work over two days to spur new ideas and compete for the next big advancement in the pediatrics health space.

The goal of the pediatric app competition is to develop applications, technologies and processes that will improve the care and experience for pediatric patients and pediatric care providers. Participants will focus on designing apps and/or games that make the pediatric patient experience more personalized and tools that will advance pediatric healthcare, NewYork-Presbyterian stated in the press release. The InnovateNYP: Pediatric App Challenge will award $50,000 in prizes to winning applications.

“Engaging the tech community represents a tremendous opportunity to develop new solutions in pediatrics,” Daniel Barchi, chief information officer at NewYork-Presbyterian, said in a statement. “Following the success of our Hackathon and Challenge over the past two years, we felt it was again the right time to tap into innovative talent at the hospital and in the tech community. We look forward to seeing their creative ideas.”

Participants are encouraged to work in teams of up to eight and develop a working prototype of a software application that uses data to advance pediatrics. “Each of the applications will use Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) enabled data, which is the newest and easy-to-implement data standard for exchanging electronic health records. FHIR facilitates data sharing between healthcare systems, makes it easy to provide healthcare information to providers and individuals on a wide variety of devices, and easily integrates with existing systems,” the press release stated.

The InnovateNYP: Pediatric Appathon takes place March 12-13 and judges will award a total of $10,000 in prizes to the top three teams. The InnovateNYP: Pediatric App Challenge launch coincides with the Appathon on March 12 and submissions are due May 20. Three winners will be awarded a total of $40,000 in prizes.
