New York Radiology to Lend a Hand in Haiti Relief Effort

Feb. 4, 2010

February 3, 2010—Raleigh, NC—Viztek, the complete radiology solution provider, is assisting current customer Complete Radiology Reading Service PLLC (CRRS) of Westbury, New York to read exams for St. Damien’s Children’s Hospital in Port au Prince, Haiti.

The 120 bed hospital, also an existing customer, experienced minor damage during the earthquake but is still able to receive patients. Due to the severe damage of other surrounding medical facilities, St. Damien’s is experiencing a drastic influx of patients. The patient’s injuries are generally orthopedic in nature and the volume of x-rays that are performed has increased dramatically, thus creating a bottleneck of exams that need to be read.

Viztek’s support team has configured CRRS’ network to St. Damien’s, allowing for secure and easy access to their database of exams. Viztek’s web-based Opal-RAD PACS software allows for encrypted and fast transmission to facilitate interpretations by  CRRS, as well as by Jericho Specialty Imaging radiologists, an affiliate of CRRS specializing in pediatric neuroimaging located in New Hyde Park, NY.  Viztek’s proprietary compression technology also helped circumvent the slow internet access the pediatric hospital currently has to contend with.

In addition to Dr. Allen Rothpearl, the CEO of CRRS, six radiologists reading for CRRS have so far also generously donated their time to read for the Haitian hospital. “Viztek is grateful for this opportunity presented by CRRS to help St. Damien’s in Haiti. Because we are unable to physically deploy one of our team members in Port au Prince to install radiology hardware, configuring the software for a generous existing customer to read off-site was an ideal situation for us to participate in,” says Joe Cermin, Viztek President.
