Allscripts' Pricey A4 Prescription

Chicago-based Allscripts — a physician provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions — has signed an agreement to acquire A4 Health Systems for approximately $272 million in cash and stock. Cary, N.C.-headquartered A4 Health Systems — a provider of practice management and EHR solutions for small- and mid-sized physician groups — generated revenues in excess of $75 million in 2005.

Avnet's IT Consolidation

Multibillion dollar Tempe, Ariz.-based Avnet Technology Solutions launched a consolidated healthcare practice designed to provide medical IT resources, including hardware, software, installation and support.

Axway Closes Cyclone Deal

Axway Software, Puteaux, France, a wholly owned subsidiary of Paris-based Sopra Group, finalized its merger with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Cyclone Commerce. The merger details specify that Axway has acquired 100 percent of Cyclone Commerce in an all-cash transaction. Cyclone products will be maintained and integrated in an updated version of Axway's XIP integration platform.

Thinking Outside of the Black Box

Black Box, a Lawrence, Pa.-headquartered technical data and voice infrastructure system company, has signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire the U.S. and Canadian commercial and U.S. government operations of NextiraOne, LLC. NextiraOne is a Houston-based integrated enterprise network, IP telephony, and voice and data solution company.

A Focused Launch at CDW

CDW Corp., a $5.7 billion technology solution provider, is now officially focusing on the healthcare market. The Vernon Hills, Ill.-headquartered company is partnering with a number of IT solution providers including Armonk, N.Y.'s IBM, Palo Alto, Calif.'s HP, and Beaverton, Ore.'s Planar.

GE Gets IDX and Goes Mobile

Headquartered in the United Kingdom, GE Healthcare, the $15 billion unit of General Electric Co., has completed its acquisition of Burlington, Vt.-headquartered IDX Systems Corp. And in an exclusive agreement with Vienna, Va.-headquartered MobileAccess Networks, GE Healthcare is creating the GE Enterprise Access solution, which is designed to help hospitals roll out critical wireless services on a common infrastructure.

MetAvante Acquires AdminiSource

In a plan to expand consumer-directed healthcare payments, Milwaukee, Wis.-headquartered banking and payment technology company MetAvante Corp., a subsidiary of Milwaukee, Wis.'s Marshall & Ilsley Corp., completed its acquisition of Carrollton, Texas' AdminiSource Corp. AdminiSource will become a MetAvante subsidiary and continue to operate under its original name.

PCT's Stat Purchase

With an eye on emergency rooms, Patient Care Technology Systems, LLC — based in Mission Viejo, Calif., a subsidiary of Riviera Beach, Fla.'s Consulier Engineering Inc. — bought Golden, Colo.-based nuMedica for an undisclosed cash amount. NuMedica's tracking solution medical software, previously branded TrackingED, looks to replace white board patient organizing with Web-based emergency department patient tracking.

Kudos to RAM

IBM of Armonk, N.Y., recently awarded its Optimized Business Partner Network status to Fort Washington, Pa.-based RAM Technologies. RAM Technologies provides healthcare software solutions for health plans and benefit administrators.

SAFE-BioPharma Partners Up

Six technology companies — including San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Arcot and Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM — will participate in Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based SAFE- BioPharma's newly launched vendor partner program. The program's goal is to help create SAFE-enabled business applications, infrastructure, services and identity credentials for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries in an effort to reduce paper and cost.

SATO Checks Off Checkpoint

Charlotte, N.C,-based SATO has reached an agreement to buy Thorofare, N.J.-headquartered Checkpoint Systems' Bar Code Systems businesses. Under the agreement, SATO will acquire Checkpoint's BCS businesses with operations in North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe, including its handheld labeling solutions in the United States. Total consideration for the business is expected to be approximately $40 million, payable in cash.
